Big Girl Blog

Hopefully there will be some BIG changes in the next few months here on A Year of Strategic Serendipity.  This blog is growing up and is going to graduate from wordpress.com.

I just purchased the domain and hosting for www.yearofserendipity.com!

It'll take me a bit to get everything transferred from here and get it to be New, Improved, & Perfect before it goes live, but I'm so excited!!!

I'm not going to lie- I'm a little overwhelmed with where to go from here: blog, career, house projects and life in general.  As I've mentioned before, I'm solar powered, so the nice weather makes me want to get out there and DO.  I'm just not sure what to DO first.  I think before I take on more projects, I need to finish those already in the pipeline: bedroom curtains, veggie garden... (and make sure to take enough pictures to show you along the way)

Before I over think everything, I just need to slow down and stop to smell the roses peonies.

Weekend Treasure Hunting

Monday mornings always come too fast.  Today, Monday decided to start off the week taunting me.  I left the house this morning with everything for my lunch but the bread for my sandwich.. ugh.  Of course I realized on the walk to the train when it was too late to turn around. Only a few minutes later, I realized that my ipod was still sitting in its dock in the dining room.  Poo.  Silent train ride.  Now I'm tethered to the computer by my headphones.  I'll get over it somehow.

This weekend was a fun one for my tag-sale habit.  $28 spent.  I actually started on Friday after work strangely enough.

I'm a little crazy and plan out what tag-sales I want to visit the night before.  I scour through Craigslist ads and write down addresses, times, and what interested me about that sale (i.e. "lots of furniture," "estate sale," or the specific item I'm interested in).

You can imagine my excitement when I saw an ad titled "Interior Decorator with Vintage store is moving" advertising a fire pit among many other things.  I promptly e-mail asking details of the fire pit, because as mentioned last week, I want a chimenea/fire pit.  Once I got the e-mail reply, her name sounded SO familiar.  Naturally, I googled her and realized she was featured just a few weeks ago on Design*Sponge!  OMG.  I took her up on her offer of stopping by Friday night to check out the fire pit before the tag sale vultures stole it out from under me.  I ended up purchasing the fire pit and a book about textiles for $25 total, but I had such a great time chatting with her!  I picked her brain about her favorite vintage sources (since she has a vintage store on Etsy: Trampoline), and I can't wait to check them out!  Such a great start to the weekend!

Saturday's tag sale fun was a bit more drawn out, but I still got a deal that made the trip worth it.  I get a little frustrated at ads that claim "HUGE tag sale" then have one table of crap.  I have also decided that people need to be beaten for claiming their sale is an Estate sale when it clearly isn't.

Enough bitter ranting.  One of my stops was an ACTUAL estate sale that made me giddy.  I only spent $3 but it was so cool to look at!  The home's former occupant was clearly into fixing lamps.  There were probably hundreds all around the house, garage and shed, all in various forms of repair and disrepair.  Color me fascinated!  Thinking back, I should have taken some pics to share, but I was so wrapped up in treasure hunting, it didn't even occur to me at the time.

I found my treasures in a back room attached to the garage that was obviously where the magic happened: the workroom.  Sitting innocently on the window sill was a dusty blue glass Bell mason jar, which a friend is hoping to use to decorate her wedding in April, so that got snatched up.  On the adjacent wall was the workbench piled up with dust, wire, parts, and misc junk.  The top shelf beckoned to me- looking over all the junk was a very old paper sorter with wire baskets.  I'm sure everyone else in the room thought I was nuts (so does Hubby), but it spoke to me and needed to be taken home.  It is missing 1 support wire, but that will quickly be remedied.

When I asked about pricing for the 2 items and was told $3 I was beyond excited.  I was expecting much more- I was so taken aback, I didn't even haggle!  The guy was probably thinking "wow, we can get $3 for that junk?" and I was thinking "wow, do they not know what they have?"  Win, Win for all!

It will eventually find its home in the office, which (when done) will be a perfect marriage of traditional and industrial.  I can't wait!

Full Frontal

Get your mind out of the gutter!  I'm talking about the yard! I figured- since I unintentionally started a theme this week, talking about the side yard, then the back yard, why not finish up the week with the front yard.

When we moved in, you got a picture tour of the inside of the house, but since everything outside was covered in feet of white coldness we neglected to show you the outside (aside from a picture from when we looked at the house).

Not too much has changed in the front yard, but like everything else to do with this house, I HAVE PLANS!  So here's a tour of our expansive (hehe) front yard.

Prior to allllll the snow, the front of the house looked like this (although after closing, we were left with a dangerous hole where the signpost once stood):

Don't like mowing the lawn?  Well, I have the perfect yard for you!

That little patch is all the grass we have.  The previous owners left us a manual push mower with the house, although we could probably get away with just scissors (or I think Handy Dad suggested a goat).  Between mowing, trimming and raking, it only takes about 10 min to take care of the lawn.  Considering I'm apparently making the back and side yard more high-maintenance with all the gardens, a break in the front is nice.

The BIG PLAN with the grass is as follows:  I want to rip out the bush on the right.  Nothing's wrong with the bush itself- it looks decent, it's healthy, it's a good size, but I'm not fond of its placement.  I'd like it to go away.  Then we could extend the grass straight across from the corner of the house to the fence.  When that happens, we'll plant some arbor vitae, or maybe lilac bushes, or something along that line to block view from the front yard to the side yard veggie patch.

The absolute next project in the front yard is the bushes on either side of the stairs.  These are the enemy!

Their mere presence offends me.  They sit there taunting and mocking me on a daily basis.  I'm sure they were lovely and proportionate once upon a time.  Now, they're so oversized that I can't see backing out of the driveway.  Hubby was convinced they could be saved and trimmed or shaped, until he attempted to.  Then he jumped on my bandwagon.  They are so beyond help I can't even describe it to you.  In their place, we're hoping for a few textural bushes much more suiting the scale of the house and yard (read: much smaller).

Do you see a theme in these yard posts?  I'm just noticing the trend as I type.  Apparently I'm anti-bush, since I'm talking about ripping out virtually every existing bush in the yard.  They've all past their prime and need to be put out of their misery.

One of the few front yard modifications is new house numbers.  Plastic generic numbers are gone in favor of these brushed nickel ones.  Very reminiscent of these  Mid-Century ones available at DWR for a mere $48 each.  We paid only $5.99 each!  I would also like to paint the front door a brighter red at some point.  Hubby's not yet convinced, but I'll bring him over to the dark side my side eventually!  The lighting will also be upgraded in the future.

The last stop in our front yard tour is the flower box.  Although the box was here when we moved in, it was the home of dead plant remnants after the forgiving winter.  So it received a pop of color.  The porch got a colorful hanging plant to compliment.

Now you've seen all but the driveway side of the house.  Maybe that's a post for next week.

*Please forgive me for the crappy pictures.  I rushed to take them as I was running out of daylight last night after going wedding dress shopping with a friend (she found THE dress though!)
