Do you know Brimfield?

When I started telling friends that I was taking a day off from the 9to5 to go to Brimfield, I started getting odd looks.  Doesn't everyone know what Brimfield is??  I grew up with my parents going just about every year.  Apparently the dresser in my childhood bedroom was a Brimfield find (just learned that this week though).  My first Brimfield was just a few years ago in '09. Still wondering what Brimfield is?  It's antiquing overload.  It's the largest outdoor antiques show in the country and happens for 5 glorious days 3 times a year (May, July, & Sept) in Brimfield, Mass.  I went with the parents this time and will probably go again with a friend in July.  None of us spent much money- Handy dad was the big spender @ $25 scoring a beautiful chair and a vintage Schick shoe shine kit (the kicker is he works at Schick).  Mom scored a piece of iron fence for her garden for $22, and I left with tons and tons of ideas and a $7 vintage candy dish.

Its impossible to describe to you the wonder that is a mile of antiques from thousands of dealers unless you are there.  I'll give it a shot with this short pictorial of Brimfield May 2011.  Enjoy!

Have I inspired you to check out Brimfield next time around?

Light Fight

From day 1 in the house, Hubby and I wanted to replace the hall light.  It was a dated, cheap looking, gold flush mount fixture.  I wasn't actively looking for a replacement yet, since there were other items that were higher on my list.  The perfect light, however came into my e-mail via Rue La La a few weeks ago. It's the right balance of modern with a vintage flair and it's looks make me very happy.  It's installation did not.

On moving day when we said "Good Riddance" to the ceiling fan, the installation of the new dimmable light was speedy.  I left the room as the first fan screw was being removed and came back a few min later to find that Hubby and the dads had the new light fully installed.  I had high hopes of the hall light being as easy......

Here's what we started with:

After waiting patiently for a few weeks until I couldn't wait anymore we had time, I we decided to give the new light a try.  The game changed the moment we removed the old light.  Let me first remind you- this house is over 110 years old but looks like its been totally updated.  Key work in that sentence is LOOKS.  This is what we found when we took down the ugly old light:

What??  It even had my handy dad stumped!

Hubby and I first attempted to attach the new light the same way the old light was attached.  That didn't go over so well.

After a little thinking and figuring- Handy dad asked me to hold off fixing it until he came up this past Friday.  He has much more electrical experience than I do and he was afraid I would open a can of worms if I delved deeper.  It was torture having a half installed light for an entire week!

A day off from the 9to5 Friday was such a whirlwind of projects that I neglected to take progress pictures like I wanted to, but we (helpful parents and I) got a TON done!

The old 'box' or whatever you may call that relic, was screwed to the lath, behind the plaster, behind the drywall, yet it wasn't recessed enough to install a modern light fixture properly.  After removing it, and doing some poking around with a flashlight and tape measure, dad discovered there was a stud behind the lath we could attach a modern electrical box to!  Huzzah! So we bought one, and Handy dad took a hack saw to the plaster and lath in his way.  Not too long later, we had a working light fixture what was installed properly and looked pretty!

Ta da!!

Sadly, though the new perfect hall light and the living room light aren't on the same page.  Although I still very much like the living room light (and its WORLDs better than the previous fan), I think it may be destined to be in the office ultimately.  Not any time soon, but eventually.

Dining Room Beginnings

First, let me apologize to you if you saw the in-progress post that accidentally got published yesterday.  Finger slip when I was trying to save the draft... oops!!

_____________________________________________________

As I obsess about focus on some rooms of the house, others seems to be pulling themselves together on their own. The dining room is one that I have been giving little thought to, but its been coming together slowly nonetheless.

Here's where the dining room started:

Here's what it currently looks like with our existing furniture and the curtains from our old bedroom at the apartment:

I was pleasantly surprised how it came together without even trying.  It still needs some love, though...

The Plan so far:

  • Mis-matched chairs w/uniform finish and upholstery. +/- 4 standard dining chairs, 1 bench, 2 upholstered chairs for either end of the table.
  • New chandelier swagged over the table.  (current one to be refinished and probably end up in the bedroom)
  • Decorative paint treatment behind piano.  New paint all walls.
  • New curtains.
  • Refinish 'liquor cabinet.'  Final location TBD.
  • Create built-in china cabinet by kitchen.

At a tag sale over the weekend, I found the first piece (for $5!) of what will ultimately be the collection of mis-matched coordinating seating.

Isn't she pretty? (Yes, I've decided the chair is a 'she.')  She was buried in a garage with other matching and non-matching chairs, but none were in as good a shape as this one.  I want a project, not a gigantic undertaking, so I only bought the 1 in the best condition.

After tag-sale-ing, on a recommendation, I went to a new (to me) fabric store and found Mecca!  (Or at least fabric store Mecca)

...and I fell in love...

....with a fabric!

It wasn't exactly a discount fabric, but it made me stop dead in my tracks.

I needed to own it.

I only purchased 1 yard to start with while I devised a plan for it (and made sure Hubby didn't hate it before I made a big fabric investment).  This gorgeous fabric will most likely be the starting point for the dining room design.  It will upholster the seating and the many fabulous colors in it will find their way around the room.  Every time I walk through the dining room (where I currently have the fabric draped), it makes me smile.  I may take inspiration from John and Sherry over at Young House Love with their 'Sue the Napkin' and name my pretty new textile inspiration.  Maybe something exotic... any ideas?
